Meta narrative
The Prohibition of alcohol was a major stepping stone in the history of the U.S. and though many disagree with its legislation, the U.S. became stronger and learned from their mistakes. The 1920's was a great time for our nation and at the same time some look on it as a failure, but if you look at the people during the time, even under the Prohibition, there was life and zeal for living. I chose the Prohibition because I think it had a lasting impact on the U.S. and was a defining decade. I love the decade of the 1920's and always wished I could travel back in time and live to see what it was like.
Prohibition of Alcohol in the 1920's
The Prohibition of Alcohol in the 1920's was the legislation of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. This Amendment banned the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol in the U.S.
protest
Of course with this ban Americans were not happy and expressed how they felt in many ways. Americans picketed, rioted, and protested in many cities.
Women and the prohibition
Not everyone in the U.S. was mad about this ban of alcohol. Many women were big advocates of the Prohibition and campaigned for many years to ban alcohol.
Many believed that the Prohibition was a failure because of the amount of citizens that were still drinking and the amount of crime that rose in cities because of bootlegging.
Crime during the prohibition
Due to the ban of the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol, bootlegging became very popular to sell for high profits. With this rise in bootlegging also came the rise in organized crime.
Economy during the Prohibition
Part of the reason behind the name the “roaring” twenties was due to the growth in the economy and companies growing larger during the 1920’s created more jobs for U.S. citizens. With the Prohibition in act, alcohol and beer prices rose and business' flourished.
Law Enforcement
Law enforcement during the Prohibition had their hands plenty full with enforcing the laws of the Prohibition, ending bootlegging and organized crime, and dealing with corrupted cops within their own departments.
Repeal of the 18th amendment
The Democratic Party platform during 1932 election included an anti-Prohibition view and Franklin Roosevelt ran for presidency promising repeal, which occurred on December 5, 1933. There was a 74 percent vote for the repeal of the Prohibition and just a 24 percent vote in opposition.
